Tanzania Photographic Safari

Tanzania, Africa February 14-24 2011

A new venture for my business, connecting with local photography guide Naseeb Mfinanga, we will provide our guests with an exceptional photography tour with your images in mind. The program is dedicated to awesome photography opportunities, coaching, and fun.

Day 1: Arrival Day
Arrive JRO TBA. Meet and transfer to accommodation, Pre-adventure briefing. Overnight at Karama Lodge

Day 2: Arusha National Park
Pick up from the Karama Lodge in Arusha and drive to Arusha National Parkfor early morning game driving & exploration, then heading to Momella Gate for a Nature walk with an armed ranger at the slope of Mount Meru.

Arusha National Park is a gem of varied ecosystems and spectacular viewsof Mt. Meru, the crater that gives the region its name. The small national park includes the slopes, summit, and ash cone of Mt. Meru, the Momela Lakes, Ngurdoto Crater, and the lush highland forests that blanket its lower slopes.

Game viewing around the Momela Lakes is at a laid-back and quiet pace, and while passing through the forest many visitors stop to search for troupes of rare colubus monkeys playing in the canopy.

Late in the afternoon drive back to Arusha and drop off Karama Lodge

Day 3: Manyara National Park
Early breakfast at the lodge & then drive to Lake Manyara for full day game viewing with a picnic lunch. The lake, situated along the impressive escarpment of the Rift Valley, takes its name from the Maasai word for Euphorbia tirucalli, a bush which is used to make a thorny hedge to protect their cattle. With luck we may see the Manyara lions, well known for their tree climbing habits, lazily resting on the branches of an Acacia tortilis tree.

Elephant, hippo, giraffe, buffalo and other animals are present in Manyara National Park, and this is a fantastic place to photograph elephant in addition to baboons, which are always found in abundance. The bird life is also very impressive with flamingos, pelicans, hornbills and plenty of forest species. Continue to the Maasai Land where we will overnight tonight at Eunoto Retreat Lodge

Day 4-6: Serengeti National Park
Morning departure for Serengeti National Park, one of the most productive habitats and impressive wildlife sanctuaries in the world. Upwards of 1.5 million wildebeest and zebra concentrate in vast herds and migrate through the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. Our photo safari is carefully timed to coincide when wildebeest and zebra concentrate in the short-grass plains of Ndutu and Salei to the south where the calving season takes place and game viewing is at its best.

During a short three week period in February over 8,000 wildebeest are born each day! This synchronization of birth in such abundance is one strategy of survival by sheer numbers against the active predation we will witness by lion, cheetah and hyena. We spend three nights at the Nasikia luxury camp, centrally located in the heart of calving area. The Nasikia Luxury Camp overlooks the Ndutu lake basin offering super habitats including swamps, Acacia woodlands, and the famous short grassplains of the Serengeti.

Day 7 : Serengeti NP - Ngorongoro Conservation Area
Game drive out of Serengeti and via Gol before continuing onto crater rim for overnight at Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge

Day 8 : Descent into Ngorongoro Crater for Photography purpose
Ngorongoro is one of the most spectacular game haunts in Africa and has been designated a World Heritage site. Here animals are found throughout the year due to the permanent availability of grass and water. Nearly 100 square miles, it contains an impressive variety of wildlife including black-maned lions, the highly endangered black rhino, herds of gnu, zebra, elephants, hippo and hyena, the most important predator within the crater.

Bird life is also prolific, with flocks of flamingos on the soda lake, plus other species of water and plains birds. Well spend our full day game driving in the Crater. In mid- afternoon, transfer into the crater highlands for overnight at NGORONGORO FARM HOUSE

Day 9 : National Park Safari
Crater Highlands – Esilalei -Arusha

Drive from the NGORONGORO FARM HOUSE and enter Esilalei, a small Maasai village on the shores of Lake Manyara. Explore the area and share cultures. Enjoy a visit to the school that we have built there.

Return to Arusha for overnight at MOUNT MERU GAME LODGE
